Top 10 Insurance Do's and Don't for tenants
- Don’t assume the landlord’s insurance covers your own personal belongings
- Do consider cover for accidental damage you may cause to the landlord’s property, fixtures and fittings
- Don’t leave the property unlocked or with open windows as it may cause you – and the landlord – a problem if you are broken into
- Do make sure landlord’s furniture meets the fire and health & safety regulations
- Don’t forget to secure insurance for your own belongings such as computers or MP3 players, a bike or a Playstation
- Do understand what happens and who you call in an emergency such as flood or fire
- Don’t try to fix a problem yourself such as leaking pipes or problems with the boiler. Always check with the landlord and/or letting agent
- Do take reasonable care of the property so the landlord can’t make a claim against you
- Don’t forget to keep a list and ideally pictures of all your belongings so that you can make a claim more easily if you lose or break anything.
